It's not every day that a new vehicle gets cheaper but that's the case with theVolkswagen ID.4electric crossover. Last month, we found out that the German company would be releasing acheaper version of the ID.4with a 62-kWh battery. That news came in the same month that VW began production of the ID.4right here in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We can now confirm that the 2023 ID.4 will start at an MSRP of $37,495 for the ID.4 Standard - that's a substantial $3,735 less than the 2022 ID.4's base price. This announcement accompanies a few more changes for the 2023 ID.4 lineup.

First, let's start with the base model and its 62-kWh battery. Its price excludes the potential $7,500federal tax creditwhich would effectively make it a sub-$30,000 electric crossover.

Despite this, it comes generously equipped with features like LED headlights, redesigned 19-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, a newly standard 12-inch touchscreen navigation system, and a 5.3-inch ID.Cockpit digital gauge cluster. With rear-wheel drive and a single electric motor making 201 horsepower, the base ID.4's range drops to 208 miles - by comparison, theFord Mustang Mach-Ecan cover at least 224 miles. According to VW, this is based on a simulated EPA test cycle, but we'll have to wait for the EPA's official numbers to be published.

In addition to the 12-inch infotainment display for all models, every ID.4 now also comes with Intelligent Park Assist, 45w USB-C charging, and Plug&Charge functionality.

The handsome but rather conservative ID.4 has been given a bit of a visual nip and tuck for the 2023 model year. Look closely and you'll notice gloss black highlights on the front bumpers, an illuminated VW emblem at the back (S models only), and fresh wheel designs. S models now ride on 20-inch alloys.

Inside, VW was after a more upmarket ambiance. To that end, even Standard models have new melange fabric/leatherette seats, replacing the cloth used before, as well as stitching on the dashboard. Here, Stone or Nutmeg color schemes are available.

The S variants have leatherette interiors in either Galaxy or Cosmic finishes. Enhanced door panel stitching and a new center console that VW says "better serves the needs of American consumers" has been fitted. The Cosmic interior is especially eye-catching with its blue seat bolsters and white steering wheel. For the top S Plus, heated rear outboard seats can now be specified.

As before, the ID.4 ships with a long list of driver-assist technologies such as forward collision warning and active blind-spot monitoring. For 2023, cyclist detection is a new addition, as are Park Assist Plus with Memory Parking and driver-initiated lane change functionality.

After the appealingly priced base model, the lineup continues with the ID.4 Pro at $42,495. It adds the 82-kWh battery that boosts range to a manufacturer-estimated 275 miles. With all-wheel drive, this trim makes 295 hp, gains an extra motor in front, and costs $46,295.

The better-equipped ID.4 S begins at $42,495, adding features like leatherette seat inserts, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic fixed glass roof. It's followed by the Pro S Plus ($50,195) and Pro S Plus AWD ($53,995). For 2023, the S Plus trim replaces the previous Gradient package. This top trim has a black roof, an Area View camera, and a new three-zone climate control system.

Expected to reach dealers in the fall, all 2023 VW ID.4 prices are subject to a $1,295 destination charge.
