2023 Toyota Supra Surprises As Twice As Many Manual Transmissions Sold Than Predicted

Sports Cars /6 Comments

Toyota Supra buyers are coming through with their enthusiasm for a three-pedal setup.

Toyota thought offering a Supra with a manual transmission would be arelative failure in terms of sales, but it appears the automaker couldn't have been more wrong. A Toyota spokesperson confirmed toRoad & Trackthat nearly half of 2023 Supra orders are specced with three pedals.

Specifically, 1,216Toyota GR Supraunits have been ordered since the option waslaunched last yearfor the 2023 model year. According to the spokesperson, this represents 47% of total 2023 model-year orders.

In comparison, Toyota predicted that only 25% of the orders would have the manual transmission option - far less than the actual figures after a year of selling three pedals to American buyers.

When the 2023 Supra launched, Toyota spokesperson Paul Hogan predicted that: "We're expecting that roughly a quarter of Supra sales will be equipped with the manual transmission option."

The GR Supra's intelligent manual transmission, developed with ZF and BMW, only came with the 3.0-liter straight-six, starting at $52,500 for the 2023 model year. Choosing between DIY shifting and the two-pedal setup came at literally no additional cost - different from the Acura Integra, where the manual option is only offered in the top-spec trim at a $5,000 premium.

Whether this affected the number of orders is unclear, but the fact remains - enthusiasts, or at least those buying the latest Supra, are putting money where their mouths are.

For the 2024 model year, the GR Supra, whether equipped with a manual or automatic transmission, starts at $54,500 or $2,000 more than the previous model year.

Unfortunately for those allergic to the straight-six, the base 2.0-liter four-banger Supra, priced at $45,540, is still unavailable with the MT option.

Performance vehicles with stick shifts are a dying breed, though we'd be remiss not to point out some notable examples that still offer a manual box. Apart from the aforementioned Integra and the Integra Type S, the new Ford Mustang has it, though onlya quarter of the current orderschoose the row-your-own option.

We can't deny that there's still a demand for a manual, but it looks like Toyota's case with the GR Supra is an exception. That's why it's understandable for companies to be on the fence about offering the option. Then again, it makes us wonder if Nissan Z Nismo naysayers will actually buy the manual...if the company decides to make it an option.
