2022 models should begin production soon.

TheChevrolet Coloradoand its corporate cousin theGMC Canyonare set to be updated for the 2022 model year with mild changes, but in the meantime, the current generation of each is in hot demand. The Colorado ZR2 Bison isespecially sought-after,but both the Colorado and the Canyon have seen deliveries from the Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri halteddue to a semiconductor chip shortage. This has led some to wonder if the 2022 models could still be on track, and if so, when production will begin. We can now report that production is set to commence on August 26, 2021.

There's now word on the 2021 models that couldn't be delivered, but it's safe to assume that things are back on track at the Missouri plant where the 2022 models will also be built. As for what you can expect from the 2022 update, details have been scant because there aren't too many changes likely. This is because both models will be replaced by all-new generations for the 2023 model year. These models will get refreshed styling, with the Colorado expected to look more likethe 2022 Silverado, and both models are tipped to ride on an updated body-on-frame platform named GMT-31XX-2.

Under the hood, both will be available with the turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder from the current Silverado 1500 that produces 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic will handle the cogs here as expected, but the current ranges' 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 3.6-liter V6, and 2.8-liter inline-four turbodiesel Duramax ae all said to be dropped for the facelifted 2022 model year. Buyers will be able to take comfort in the fact that the refreshed trucks will gain additional infotainment and safety features while they wait for the 2023 version to arrive. But with the next Ford Rangershaping up to be a great truck,Chevrolet may want to accelerate its plans for the all-new generation.
