Though Jeep has developed the Cherokee into a genuinely impressive compact crossover that is also an accomplished all-rounder, there are still some major issues that prevent it from being a vehicle that would really appeal to everyone. All three engines would perform wonderfully in any other application, but in the Cherokee, they are severely hindered by the 9-speed automatic transmission that just can't seem to draw out their potential. Regardless of the powertrain, the Cherokee is also not the most comfortable crossover on the road, nor the most practical with its below-average cargo space. And though it does come with a good number of driver-assist and safety features, both the NHTSA and the IIHS's review of the 2021 Jeep Cherokee returned just mediocre results, which may not be good enough for a family-oriented 5-door crossover.

It's not all bad news, though. The fairly strong V6 motor and the class-leading towing capacity still impress. The higher-tier models also boast impressive interiors that are comfortable and laden with cool tech, upscale materials, and plenty of creature comforts. The Trailhawk remains the biggest selling point for the Cherokee line, however, as there are few competitors that can match its talents. Of course, this is moot if you're not an avid off-road adventure-seeker. There are plenty of other more mundane vehicles out there to ferry your family around, but few sate their wanderlust like the Cherokee.

The problem with the regular on-road versions of the Jeep Cherokee is that their competitors are simply better in most matters, except towing capability. And while there may be a lot of variety in the 2021 Jeep Cherokee line, many of the models on offer are nothing more than just gimmicky cosmetic alternatives. The only model we can recommend in good conscience is the Cherokee Trailhawk, which earns praise for its esteemed off-roading proficiency. With its large-displacement V6, standard off-road 4WD suspension, and numerous hardy underpinnings, the Trailhawk is an elite adventure vehicle that can also haul whatever resources the avid adventurer could possibly need for their excursions. Its proficiency and adventurous character best pair either the Spitfire Orange or Hydro Blue exterior paint schemes. We'd also option in the $1,245 Technology Group for the advanced driver assists it adds.
