2023 F-150 Lightning Performance

When Ford set out to build its first electric pickup truck, it knew that first impressions count and opted to make the F-150 Lightning a bit more powerful than it really needed to be. Both the standard and more powerful extended-range versions come with a two-motor setup and produce mountains of torque. This truck is massively quick: independent testing has shown that the more powerful Ford F-150 Lightning is capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in four seconds flat and can cross the quarter mile in only 12.7 seconds at 107 mph. That applies to the model with 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque. If you told a farmer thirty years ago that his F-150 would eventually grow into a truck capable of doing those times, he'd laugh you off.

The F-150 is a good hauler, at least for an EV; the base model can tow up to 7,700 pounds, while the Extended Range model can haul 10,000 lbs but only in XLT or Lariat guise. Without the Max Trailer Tow Package, towing is limited to 5,000 lbs with the Standard Range battery or 7,700 lbs with the Extended Range battery.

These numbers can't match the gas-powered F-150 which has nearly double the maximum trailering capacity.

Engine and Transmission

Ford offers the F-150 with two battery packs; a standard 98-kWh pack in the Standard Range truck and a 131-kWh pack in the Extended Range vehicle. Of course, there is no engine in the Ford F-150 Lightning, with dual electric motors instead. All models come with all-wheel drive. The standard model produces a healthy 452 horsepower, while the Extended Range truck churns out a strong 580 hp. Both trucks produce 775 lb-ft of torque.

这给AWD闪电炸药的性能in any driving situation, and we did notice that the throttle could be a touch sensitive, resulting in bursts of speed uncanny of a truck. In the city and on the highway, there's always enough power on hand, even when towing, but be careful of your range; excessive acceleration, hurtling along at top speed, and heavy towing seem to take its toll on the Lightning.

2023 F-150 Lightning Gas Mileage

The Ford F-150's mileage seems decent on paper, but recent independent testing has shown that it struggles under heavy load. According to the latest figures from the EPA, the F-150 Lightning Extended Range will manage best figures of 78/63/70 MPGe on the city/highway/combined circuit for a total range of 320. The standard battery pack will get 76/61/68 MPGe, although a later Ford update increased its range from 230 to 240 miles. The top-of-the-range Platinum with the Extended Range package will manage 73/60/66 MPGe with a range of 300 miles. As long as you are close to DC fast chargers or have a decent charging setup at home, the range specs and MPGe ratings of the Ford F-150 Lightning should suffice.

With the SR battery, the onboard charger power is 11.3 kW/10.5 kW for input/output, or 19.2 kW/17.6 kW for the ER battery. The best-case scenario would be at a Level 3 DC fast-charging station where the SR battery can be replenished from 15% to 80% in 44 minutes, a time that drops to 41 minutes for the ER battery. That's when charging at 150 kW. At 50 kW, the Level 3 charging times increase to 91 minutes for the SR and 122 minutes for the ER. If you don't have much time to spare, you can add 41 miles of range at 150 kW for the SR or 54 miles for the ER with 10 minutes of charging.

On the other end of the spectrum, using a Level 2 mobile charger at 32A/240W will replenish the SR's battery from 15% to 100% in 13 hours, or a lengthy 19 hours in the case of the ER.
