The interior of the BMW Z4 Roadster isn't very exciting but it's ergonomically sound and constructed from high-quality materials. Especially pleasing is the soft-touch slush molding used for the dashboard, which is trimmed in SensaTec leatherette. It's all a bit dull in the default black, but way more extroverted colors such as the optional Magma Red spice things up markedly. There is enough space for two people and the cabin is tech-forward and modern, with standard dual 10.25-inch displays - one for the gauge cluster and the other for the infotainment. However, there aren't many storage spaces. Standard equipment is decent and includes dual-zone climate control, power seats, and push-button start.
There are only two seats in the BMW Z4 Roadster, but both occupants enjoy good levels of seating comfort. Both trims come with standard powered M Sport seats that can be extensively adjusted and which move far enough back even for tall drivers. Getting inside requires some stooping due to the low 51-inch roof height, but interior space is surprisingly good for two people, with a generous 42.2 inches of legroom and 38.9 inches of headroom on offer. You sit low and stare at Escalade running boards, and your view is somewhat obstructed by thick A-pillars and over-the-shoulder blind spots with the top up.
BMW Z4 Roadster Trims | Seating | Headroom Front Seat | Legroom Front Seat | Shoulder Room Front |
---|---|---|---|---|
sDrive30i Roadster | 2 | 38.9 in. | 42.2 in. | 54.3 in. |
M40i Roadster | 2 | 38.9 in. | 42.2 in. | 54.3 in. |
There are five interior colors for the BMW Z4 Roadster but the default is all-black. The standard upholstery on the seats is SensaTec leatherette. Black Alcantara with blue stitching is also available at a cost of $1,250 on both trims, but requires interior ambient lighting to be added, resulting in a total amount of $1,500. You can get Vernasca leather upholstery for $1,500 in Black, Ivory White, Cognac, or Magma Red - the last three with contrast stitching. However, on the sDrive30i, the Vernasca leather also necessitates the Convenience package, parking sensors, and ambient lighting, increasing the total outlay to $2,550. On the M40i, the Vernasca leather is bundled with the Premium and Driving Assistance packages, taking the total amount to $3,550. The default interior trim in the sDrive30i is Black High Gloss, with Aluminum Tetragon or Aluminum Mesh Effect available at $150 each. In the M40i, the default is Aluminum Tetragon, but the other two are also available at no additional cost. The three-spoke M Sport steering wheel is trimmed in leather in both models.
The trunk space of the BMW Z4 Roadster amounts to a decent 9.9 cubic feet, which is sufficient for a large suitcase or a few smaller carry-on cases. You'll be pleased to learn that the roof retracts into a dedicated space and doesn't affect trunk volume when it's down. Storage spaces in the cabin aren't overly generous; the door bins and glove compartment are small, and the rear-wall net behind the seats doesn't really hold anything stuffed in there securely. The cupholders are under the center armrest and almost impossible to use with the armrest in place.
