2023 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 First Look Review: An Endangered Species

The price of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 was already high, but it's even higher for the latest version. The 2023 model starts at an MSRP of $149,200, rising to $170,350 for the S variant.

That's a lot of money considering that the E63 S Sedan begins at an MSRP of $112,800 and is as quick to 60 mph as the base GT 63. Other rivals include theBMW M5which will cost $109,900, although its styling is comparatively low-key. There is also thePorsche Panamera TurboS at $186,400, and it's even quicker than the Merc.

For the 2023 model year, the exterior design of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 four-door coupe has been tweaked, although many probably won't notice the subtle changes. There is an individually designed front fascia with wider air intakes that are pointed more towards the car's center, while airflow is channeled via three vertical fins.

No other notable changes have been made to the car, but nothing much was needed: this is still a ravishing vehicle to look at. From the Panamericana grille with its vertical slats to the curvaceous tail with its retractable wing and four quad-exit tailpipes, the AMG looks ready to play. LED lighting, of course, is standard. Wheel sizes have not been specified, but previous iterations of the GT 63 had 19-inch alloys, or 20s on the GT 63 S.

Newly available colors for the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 are Starling Blue Metallic and Starling Blue Magno. In total, there are four matte paints, five metallics, and two solid colors. The signature Manufaktur paint palette has also grown to include Arabian Grey, Cashmere White Magno, and China Blue.

Various packages are available to further customize the Merc, including the AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber Package.

Dimensions for the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 haven't been published, but since the exterior changes have been minor, we expect the same length of 199.2 inches, width of 81.5 inches (including the mirrors), and height of 56.8 inches (57 inches for the GT 63 S). Both derivatives share a wheelbase of 116.2 inches.

Based on previous independent tests, this car weighs between 4,440 and 4,600 pounds, specs that could have changed slightly for the 2023 model.

Soon, non-hybrid AMGs will be consigned to the history books. For now, the engine in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 is the familiar 4.0-liter V8 with twin turbochargers that delivers 575 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, or 630 hp and 664 lb-ft if you spring for the GT 63 S.

Both models come with the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system and a nine-speed MCT automatic transmission. The standard model will power its way from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 193 mph, while the 63 S can accomplish the benchmark sprint in 3.1 seconds and reach 195 mph.

It goes without saying that both trims are incredibly quick and powerful, and the brawny V8 soundtrack lingers in the memory long after you've switched the car off.

For 2023, the standard AMG Ride Control Plus with Air Body Control suspension has been further enhanced. The suspension comes with adaptive, electronically controlled adjustable damping. Mercedes-AMG says it has been able to widen the gap between minimum and maximum damping force responses, thereby allowing for more flexibility in map design. This has increased the car's dual-natured ability to be either sporty or comfortable, with driving modes accessible via the AMG Dynamic Select controller.

Nothing much has changed in this area, with both trims returning an EPA-rated 15/21/17 mpg city/highway/combined. Those are identical figures to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S.

When the 21.1-gallon gas tank in the Merc is full, that works out to a range of almost 360 miles.

A greater range of upholstery and trim options are available inside, but because the GT 63 wasn't available on the online configurator at the time of writing, we can't tell you what all the options are. We do know that the interior of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 can be equipped with three new options from the Manufaktur range, with classy Nappa leather with diamond quilting for the seats and a two-tone AMG Performance steering wheel.

The rest of the interior is familiar, but that's mostly a good thing. A very wide console makes the front seats in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 feel cosy and sporty at the same time, and the wraparound dashboard looks beautiful. Not everyone will like the outlandish ambient lighting, but the dual 12.3-inch screens are large enough to keep track of all the important information while on the move. Of course, the MBUX system allows access to all the essentials like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, and a top-notch sound system.

In the second row, ingress and egress are not as easy as in the E-Class, and there is also a bit less space to stretch out than in that car, but those are the sacrifices many will be prepared to make since the GT looks so much sportier.

Cargo space in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 four-door coupe is 12.7 cubic feet, which is only average considering the size of this luxury behemoth.
