Watch Travis Pastrana Jump His 862-HP Subaru Wagon Over A Florida Bridge

Motorsport /3 Comments

This is straight out of a movie.

For more than three decades, Subaru has been the purveyor of exceptionally agile and affordable performance cars, the latest being theWRX. So when the Japanese automaker partnered with Travis Pastrana to produce a follow-up to thecarbon-bodied 2020 WRX STI, we were rather surprised to see what they selected -a 1983 GL Wagon.

But unlike the humble wagon on which it's based, Pastrana's drifter is a menacing machine. Affectionately known as the 'Family Huckster' this '83 Subaru is powered by a four-cylinder boxer engine with 862 horsepower. Power is sent to all four wheels via a sequential six-speed gearbox. The stunt performer behind the wheel isknown for his extreme antics, which explains his most recent stunt involving the Subaru and a bridge in Florida.

Shared on YouTube and Instagram, we can see the classic wagon racing across the draw bridge before flying majestically across the daunting gap. Pastrana lands with minimal drama as fans and passers-by cheer the heroic stuntman on.

For the Subaru GL, this was just another day at the office. Despite its senior age, the Japanese family car has been massively reworked to be every bit as incredible as the WRX STI. Apart from a rally-style suspension setup, the GL also boasts an active rear wing, and all the body panels are fashioned out of carbon fiber.

You'd be mistaken for thinking those roof racks are just part of the aesthetic; on the contrary; it actually feeds air into the engine's radiator, which is mounted at the rear. Even the retro-styled wheels are functional. The gold-painted monoblocks were selected for their strength.

This stunt is likely part of the much-anticipatedGymkhana12 film, which was put on hold when Pastrana injured himself earlier this year. Rumors suggest Ken Block will make a return for the latest iteration, this time behind the wheel of hiscustom-made Audi S1 Hoonitron. Block has also announced that he's working on a project calledElectrikhana, which is a similar concept but with a focus on electric vehicles.

The drifting champion palmed off duties to Pastranaafter the 10th installment ofGymkhanaand was sorely missed in the latest version. Let's just hope the speculations floating around the grapevine turn out to be true, as it would be great to see both of them in the latest version. If this stunt involving 'Family Huckster' is anything to go by, it should make for spectacular viewing.
