Watch The Bugatti Chiron Race A Fighter Jet

Both are extreme machines designed to go very, very fast.

Despite producing very few models, the Bugatti brand takes a long time to produce vehicles. That's to be expected with a company that places attention to detail very high on its priority list, but lately, these various new projects have been edging closer to production. The $18 million La Voiture Noireis almost ready, the 1,600-horsepower Centodieciis wrapping up testing, and between all of this, Bugatti hasbeen marketing itselfwith theChiron Sport Les Legendes du Ciel. Revealed last year, just 20 of these will be made, and that makes it rarer than the French Navy's Rafale Marine jet. Just 46 of these were made, but that's not the only place where you may find similarities.

In 1909, Ettore Bugatti founded his car company in Molsheim, France. A year later, the French army introduced naval aviators. Fast forward almost 100 years to 2001, when Bugatti unveiled the Veyron 16.4, coinciding with the deployment of the jet you see in the video above.

Furthermore, the fleet at the French Navy's Landivisiau base has consisted exclusively of the Rafale Marine since 2016, the same year in which Bugatti launched theChiron. More similarities can be found in the Chiron Sport too as they both use wings, though for different purposes. While an aircraft uses them to generate lift, Bugatti uses a deployable spoiler to generate downforce, as well as using it as an airbrake to slow the car down from high speeds.

Both vehicles use hydraulics too. In the jet, its landing gear is hydraulically controlled, while the Chiron Sport is the first car ever to feature an adaptive chassis that's entirely hydraulically controlled. In the jet, the landing gear retracts through hydraulic systems while in the car, the system adapts the chassis depending on the driving mode you're in.

Ultimately, these are both exceptionally impressive vehicles that are incredibly fast, astonishingly well-built, and unbelievably complicated - not to mention expensive. All all cynicism aside, Bugatti must have done something right for a French Navy officer to say that "the Chiron Sport is the ideal vehicle for navy pilots."
