Toyota recommends buyers to get other GR kits as well to prevent a rear-biased aero balance.
Toyota has rolled a new swan-neck rear wing for theGR86in Japan - a functional and nifty-looking performance part developed by the Toyota Racing Development (TRD). The GR rear wing is available for 517,000 yen, or around $3,536, with the current exchange rates.
For the price, you get a new GR rear wing for your sports car developed using carbon fiber-reinforced plastics. Instead of the usual mount on top of the trunk lid, the wing is attached to the vertical section, allowing the aerodynamic kit to sit low while retaining a striking appearance.
The shape of the wing is optimized using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis, ensuring adequate downforce without increasing air resistance.
Buyers can choose from three different adjustment settings: zero degrees, 1.25 degrees, and 2.5 degrees. The zero-degree setting - which is the standard position - is ideal for units equipped with a GR package, while the 1.25-degree setting is for units equipped with large canards and front lip spoilers. Lastly, the 2.5-degree setting is ideal for wet or slippery road surfaces.
The GR aerodynamic package starts at 361,900 yen ($2,475), while the fuller set starts at 474,100 yen ($3,243). This package may not look as flashy as thecomprehensive widebody kit from Liberty Walkbut buyers can be assured with the competent in-house development works from the performance division.
The GR rear wing is only available on vehicles without the GR trunk spoiler. Toyota also recommends installingother body kitsto prevent a rear-biased aero balance.
The aerodynamic kits cater to the second-generation Toyota GR86, which uses a 2.4-liter naturally-aspirated engine good for 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Athird-generation iterationis reportedly in the works, which could get a turbocharger -unlike the Mazda Miata.
The kits are also in manual and automatic versions, offered in base and pricier painted finishes.
