New Toyota GR86 Arriving By 2026 With Big Changes

Including the turbo three-cylinder from the GR Corolla.

The next generation of theToyota GR86may be on the way much soon than expected according to reports from一个utocar. The British publication says that the current generation sports car may be phased out in as little as two years due to stringent fuel and emissions standards Japan will be enacting and windshield safety regulations that are arriving in Europe next year. This means the sports car introduced in 2021 may be off of the market in 2025.

The solution is for Toyota to not only redesign the vehicle but also electrify it. We've beenhearing rumorsthe company is working on this as early as last October. This seemed hard to believe given the recent introduction of the second-generation vehicle, but now it's appearing ever more likely.

The new vehicle will most likely use a hybridized version of the three-cylinder setup found in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, meaning we could be looking at a small, rear-wheel drive sports car pushing 300 horsepower that is wholly different from the Supra. It also looks like there willnot be a Subaru siblingthis time, but that doesn't mean Subaru can't cook up something for itself. With electrification, the GR86 will be able to soldier on much longer, or at the very least until combustion vehicle sales are made much harderin many parts of the worldin a decade's time.

Toyota also seems to think hybridization is the right answer. When一个utocarasked Toyota chief technology officer Hiroki Nakajima about the subject, he said, "Hybrid systems are always a good solution for environmental cars," he said, "not just for passenger cars but for sporty cars as well. We can build them at a lower price than battery-electric models, and we know how to make them fun to drive."

The next-generation GR86 could make use of Toyota's much-hyped solid-state battery technology that will help toreduce costs and perhaps increase outputs. The main concern would be increasing weight in a vehicle that's known for being light and nimble, but seeing how there are fully-electric sports cars like the Caterham Project V that weigh less than the current GR86 on the horizon, we think Toyota will be able to pull the whole thing off.
