Toyota Can't Make Up its Mind Regarding the GT86

Rumor /108 Comments

Apparently plans for a convertible and a pair of unique turbo sedans are back in play.

We may just be as tiredreporting on this subjectas you are reading about it. Nevertheless, a credible report coming from Australian online site Motoring.au is claiming that Toyota will soon launch an expanded GT86 family. The long-rumored convertible, sedan and turbocharged variants are all underway. What's more is that the sedan will be turbocharged and will come with all-wheel drive as well as an optional turbo-hybrid powertrain.

If any of this is true, expect the sedan to have been stretched by about 20 inches and will be about 4 inches taller than the coupe. Regarding its engines, the sedan will supposedly receive a Subaru-provided 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four paired to an eight-speed automatic. If we're not mistaken, the Subaru WRX STI is powered by that exact same engine. Just saying. The second engine option is that hybrid setup, which will be comprised of the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid's flat-four, although it'll feature a new and more powerful hybrid unit. Both versions are expected in 2016.

The convertible, however, may arrive as soon as this fall. It'll feature a softtop that'll fold down in about 20 seconds. No word in regards to a turbocharged coupe, but don't expect Subaru to adapt these models in any way. Also no word in regards to what'll happen with the Scion FR-S. Again, nothing has been confirmed by Toyota just yet, but we may have some official announcements in the very near future.
