It's a small adjustment, but enough to take note of.
To enhance the computing power of its cars, theTesla Model 3andModel Yhave had their Intel Atom processors swapped out for more powerful AMD Ryzen chips. This piece of technology acts as the powerhouse for the cars' infotainment, navigation, andeven the gamingsystems so naturally, the more powerful the processor, the better the performance.
However, it looks like more power has indeed translated to more responsibility for the electric car's battery systems. The increased computing power has resulted in higher energy consumption which appears to have decreased the range of every model by a nominal amount.Teslascopewas able to confirm that a customer in Australia was met with an order update which indicated the range of their Model 3 would be reduced.
The alert states that the range of the Model 3 has been reduced in favor of an optimized touchscreen experience using the AMD product. According to this, the 374-mile range of the Model 3 would be cut down by 14 miles, a drop of 3.5%.
This situation lines up with the adjustments made to the WLTP range ratings on European models that saw the Model 3 saddled with a lower range estimate. Contrary to this is the Model Y's increase in range, but this is likely associated with the fact that it reportedly bears a larger 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack, among other differences that include more usable battery capacity.
These WLTP adjustments saw no changes for the base rear-wheel-drive Model 3 at 317 miles for the 18-inch wheel spec and 305 miles for the 19-inch. The long-range all-wheel-drive option with the 18-inch wheels has been reduced by 6.8 miles while the 19-inch wheel model lobs 7.4 miles off the range. The Performance trim with the 20-inch wheels sees a more drastic reduction of 12 miles.
As noted, the Model Y long-range all-wheel-drive model with the 19-inch wheel gains 17 miles of range and the 20-inch, 16 miles. The flagship Model Y Performance is increased by 21 miles (7.1% more), but if that's not enough, newaftermarket tech could provide the solution.
