Tastefully Built VW Convertible Comes With A Surprising Engine Upgrade

Classic Cars /9 Comments

The build has a long list of modifications including a newly developed Type 4 engine.

Since the introduction of the Volkswagen Beetle, the nameplate ran with an enduring formula for years until it wasdiscontinued in 2019. Tweaking the formula won't hurt, though, as proven by this restored Oak Green convertible byMemminger, which kept the iconic design but packs an interesting engine upgrade.

Powering the vehicle is a "newly developed" Type 4 engine with a displacement of 2,716 cc (2.7 liters) - about twice the size of what came from the factory. The power unit makes 173 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque, giving a more spirited driving feel than the original powertrain setup. The gearbox is said to be completely overhauled to a long ratio configuration.

Looking further at the specs, the driving experience is made sportier with modifications such as a sports suspension, a sports steering wheel, and a stainless steel sports exhaust. The car also gets disc brakes on all four wheels and a dry sump tank that efficiently pumps oil into the powertrain.

While the build has sporty enhancements, the interior begs to differ with its luxurious appeal spearheaded by the brown color scheme. The cabin is fitted with perforated Recaro seats with a heating function, a speedometer of up to 200 km/h (124 mph), and additional instruments in carbon strips.

On the exterior, the recognizable Beetle-like silhouette has been preserved, unlike the poor man'sRolls-Royce-inspired buildwe covered weeks ago. There are a few modifications that enhance the looks, though, including the two more headlights and Fuchs-style aluminum rims you may recognize from classicPorsche 911sports cars.

This more potent Volkswagen Beetle Convertible build has already been sold for an undisclosed sum. That's fine as it resides in Germany, so long paperwork (and cost) awaits if you decide to bring it stateside. Maybe it would be more affordable to build one yourself, or, if it suits your taste, go for anEV conversion.
