Production at Rivian's plant in Normal, Illinois is in full swing.

Rivian is ramping up the production of itsin-house developed Enduro motorsfor dual-motor variants of the R1T andR1Sat its plant in Normal, Illinois. The company opted to build the electric motor in-house instead of relying on its supplier, Bosch, in a bid to speed up the production of the R1T and R1S and get rid of the backlog that has been plaguing the company amidst huge interest from buyers.

The company has revealed that its Normal plant in Illinois is now running three shifts to address itsR1Tand R1S production backlogs, as seen in the behind-the-scenes video below. However, Rivian did not provide a new timeline concerning product deliveries.

In 2022, Rivian's initial production target was set at 50,000 units, but itdecreased the target by halfdue to the chip crisis and supply chain issues. But Rivian still couldn't hit its adjusted target as it fell short by 663 units.

Rivan chief operating officer (COO) Frank Klein said the company is on track to hasten up its production process this year. Klein shared that Rivian started producing its in-house dual motor in its Normal plant last February.

"We plan on building 44 units per hour … so we will be capable of producing 832 Enduro motors every single day," Klein said.

However, note that the numbers shared by Klein were revealed when Rivian's Normal plant was running only two shifts. Now that the plant is implementing three shifts, the number of dual motors produced should increase, which could help Rivian hit its updated production target this year, which is 52,000 units.

Rivian is determined that the waiting period for a vehicle will be "shorter than ever" by adding an extra shift to its operations. At present, Rivian's customer site claims that typical vehicle delivery occurs within 16 weeks of ordering.

The R1T and R1S equipped with Rivian's performance dual motor generates up to 665 horsepower and 829 lb-ft of torque (in Performance guise). It can go from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and has anEPA-estimated 352 miles of range.
