Prepare To Say Goodbye To The COPO Camaro

Muscle Cars /3 Comments

There may never be another one.

It was almost a year ago when the2020 COPO Camaro John Force Editiondebuted at Chevy's display at the 2019 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Chevy also celebrated 50 years of the drag race-ready, NHRA-sanctionedCOPO Camaroin 2019 (although the program was only re-launched in 2012 with the then-fifth generation Camaro). And then came the one-off, all-electric eCOPO Camaro. Could this hardcore electric vehicle provide a clue for the future of drag racing? Perhaps, but what seems to be quite clear is that the COPO Camaro program as we know is coming to an end.

As first reported by Dragzine, Chevy has issued a "last call" for the 2020 COPO Camaro, and its choice of words indicates the conclusion of an era.

"Now is the time to become a member of an elite club - the COPO Camaro family. This is your chance to own a piece of drag racing history. With fewer than 650 in existence, the track use only COPO Camaro is a work of art handcrafted for you by GM engineers, making it the perfect addition to your collection or racing team. Stand out in your 2020 COPO Camaro with more color options than ever before: two John Force inspired options, four base colors, and seven historic paint schemes honoring the original 1969 COPO Camaro. It's time to be the center of attention."

Also, Chevrolet Performance COPO and Promotions Manager Todd Gallant confirmed that only "a couple of handfuls" of 2020 COPO Camaros are left, although he didn't provide a precise figure.

The COPO Camaro is limited to just 69 examples per year and the latest generation is powered by a 427 cubic-inch (7.0-liter) V8, a far cry from the street-legalChevy Camaroengine choices of either a 3.6-liter V6 or a 6.2-liter V8, the latter with upwards of 650 horsepower in ZL1 guise. Sadly, Gallant also confirmed the future of the COPO Camaro program is very uncertain but made no mention of the eCOPO.

As we just reported, sales of the Camaro lineupcontinue to drop and given GM's commitment to an all-electric future, it appears very unlikely a seventh-generation Camaro will arrive anytime soon, if ever.
