Porsche 911 Hybrid Coming Sooner Than We Thought

But an all-electric version is still years away, and it's not a priority for Porsche at this stage.

ThePorsche 911has escaped hybridization for some time, but the iconic sports car will become electrified in the middle of the decade, according to company executives.

Frank Moser, Vice President for the 911 and 718 model lines, toldMotorTrend(MT) that the company is working on the facelifted 992.2, which will debut in the next two years. "We have developed the hybrid, a performance hybrid of the 911, and that's about in the middle of the decade - the next generation of the 992," said the exec.

Moser was reluctant to go further and would not reveal which 911 models would receive hybrid technology first. The 911 hybrid has beenspotted testing at the Nurburgringon several occasions. Rumors suggest the electrified model will be positioned above the 911 Turbo S, but that remains to be seen.

如果是这样的话,我们可以期待更多的than 640 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. We know that the 911 hybrid won'tadopt a plug-in hybrid setup, even as the country sets about electrifying its entire lineup. While traditionalists may not be pleased with this move, they can relax in the knowledge that there are no immediate plans for a fully electric 911.

Last year, a company official said there's still strong demand for gasoline-powered sports cars. "We have a bold strategy for electric cars, and we are [taking] bold steps, big steps with electrification. But we also must look at the market and customer needs," said Frank-Steffen Walliser.

Porsche says that an electric 911 isat least a decade awaybecause current technology doesn't allow the company to create a worthy battery-powered 911. Battery weight and platform space are currently the most significant issues.

Porsche confirmed this toMT. Michael Steiner, Porsche board member for development, said the "911 will be, definitely, if at all, the last [Porsche] that will be electrified. He added that "the 911 should not get too heavy. So this is the reason we look more for performance-oriented solutions, and we have other cars for people who would like more electrification. We don't see the need to just convert our icon into an electric car that has disadvantages."

The same can't be said of the 718 Boxster/Cayman lines. The new model is on the horizon and willdebut as a fully electric replacement. The latest generationwill be sold alongsidethe existing ICE-powered models, catering to customers not ready for an electric sports car.

Of course, sound is a hugely important part of driving a Porsche. Moser says Porsche is working on adistinct sound for its electric models. "We are working on the kind of sound which suits the brand to the different models. But for me, the sound is not the No.1 goal."
