Pirelli Makes Special Rubber For Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition

The model-specific tire improves not only performance but comfort too.

When theFord Mustang Mach-Ewas first revealed, fans of the Mustang nameplate were outraged for several reasons. Firstly, the revered model name would be affixed to a crossover - and an electric one, at that. The Mustang name conjures up imagery of V8 muscle cars and straight-line performance, not an EV.

With the introduction of the GT Performance Edition, the Blue Oval was hoping to correct this, by giving the crossover performance and dynamism befitting its name. With a claimed 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, it's not far off the GT500's acceleration figures.

With performance figures like that, it's essential that you're stuck like glue to the tarmac. Working with Ford, Pirelli has developed a unique P-Zero tire for the fastest Mustang Mach-E. Available in 245/45R20 103Y XL size, the sticky rubber can be identified by the 'Elect' legend found on the sidewall, denoting Pirelli's tires for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The tires, says the Milan-based company, have been created to allow drivers to fully enjoy the performance of the athletic crossover. Aside from the obvious handling and grip benefits, the bespoke product also takes other factors into consideration and aids in improving comfort with less road noise and extended range, courtesy of a low rolling resistance.

The P Zero tire forms part of the brand's Ultra High-Performance range, created with Pirelli's 'perfect fit' ethos. Equipped with two electric motors and four-wheel drive, the newly-developed product aims to improve all aspects of the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition's driving experience.

Ford recently announced a host ofrevisions for their electric crossover, the price-point into the range increasing by $1,000 to $43,895 MSRP. It's not just the price that increased though; buyers now have more choice pertaining to battery packs. Two choices, Standard Range and Extended Range, offer 70 kWh and 91 kWh, respectively.
