Here's your first proper look at the W214-generation E-Class.

The W214-generationMercedes-Benz E-Classhas been leaked ahead of its reveal.

Images shared byCocheSpiasgive us our best look yet at the front end and the interior. It seems the latest E-Class will retain the traditional grille with the Three-pointed star perched atop the hood but based on spy shots, we know a larger, centrally-positioned starwill also be made available.

The newcomer borrows design cues from the larger S-Class, which also wears a larger traditional grille. The front headlights appear more bulbous and have a more rounded design. The larger S-Class and smaller C-Class have angular, more aggressive clusters.

The interior also seems to be a blend of C-Class and S-Class. A large screen dominates the fascia and is bolstered by the digital instrument display. However, unlike those models, this one isn't positioned on the center stack, but is dashboard-mounted instead, marking a departure from the one design across three models ethos of Mercedes models of the past.

A slim strip of air vents can be seen above the center display and spans the dashboard width. As is fashionable, a slab of open-pore wood dominates the rest of the dash.

Thankfully, the E-Class hasn't followed in the footsteps of the EQS, which features a fully-digital dashboard display. We can, however, expect future Mercedes models to adopt this setup.

We're yet to see the undisguised rear end, but patent drawings show itclosely resembles the C-Class Mercedes.

While some may appreciate the S-Class-aping design, traditionalists may be disappointed by the cookie-cutter styling. Ever since the W210 debuted in 1995, the E-Class has always been a distinctive sedan in the Mercedes line-up and differentiated itself from its larger and smaller sibling.

Powertrain-wise, we anticipate an array of four-cylinder hybrid engines. Expect the upcoming E300 to utilize the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine producing 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

While the EQE will cater to the all-electric crowd, we anticipate Mercedes will eventually offer the new E-Class as a plug-in hybrid variant as well. As for the AMG derivatives, it's unclear whether the executive sedan will follow in the C63's footsteps and make use of a seriously-powerful four-pot. That'sa possibility for the E53,但我们希望63年保留的V8有点长er.

The new E-Klasse won't be without its challengers. BMW is also readying the 5 Series for a new generation. Rumors suggest the latest G60 iteration is also expected to lose its V8 engine. This doesn't include the high-performance M5, which is expected to use the hybrid motor from the newly-introduced BMW XM.

With anexpected 700 hp at its disposal, the next-gen M5 will be a worthy adversary to whatever Affalterbach can muster up. Performance aside, it should prove a match for the Mercedes E-Class in the tech department, too.

It's yet to be verified by BMW, but sources close to the matter have said the latest 5er will gain Level 3 self-driving technology in select markets. Both will be the most advanced mid-sized offerings from these marques, and we cannot wait to see how they fare when pitted against each other.
