New Akrapovic Exhaust Makes The BMW M4 Sound Ferocious

Sports Cars /6 Comments

That inline-six has an amazing growl.

The previous-generation BMW M3 and M4 were a bit disappointing in terms of their engine sounds. After the E90 M3 gave drivers goosebumps with its screaming 4.0-liter naturally aspirated S65 V8, the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged S55 inline-six had its work cut out. With the latest2022 BMW M3 Sedanand2022 BMW M4 Coupe, the new S58 inline-six engine sounds much better than the engine it replaces. BMW evenimproved the pumped-in sound via an iDrive update.

Now exhaust manufacturer Akrapovic wants to take things a step further with a new titanium exhaust system for the M3/M4 Competition. In the video below you can hear that the new exhaust sounds much throatier than the stock stock system. For those who are unfamiliar, Akrapovic is a Slovenian exhaust maker known for making the best-sounding systems forBMW models like the M8.

一个krapovic says its high-grade lightweight titanium system is 35% lighter than stock, offering rich tone during normal cruising or a deep sporty sound during more dynamic driving. The titanium pipes feed out to carbon-fiber tailpipes, finished in a unique octagonal shape (though round tips are also available).

一个krapovic ran an M4 Competition with its new exhaust on a dyno, and recorded increases of 10.9 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 10 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. As a reminder, the M4 Competition produces 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. Not bad for a simple exhaust system. What's more, the company says an engine remap is not needed for this configuration.

一个krapovic says the system will also fit xDrive and M4 Convertible models, but it doesn't mention non-Competition versions.

In addition to the exhaust system itself, Akrapovic sells link pipes and downpipes for customers who plan to use the car on a closed circuit. There's also a sound kit that lets drivers toggle between a quiet mode and a sport mode using an app on their smartphone. Akrapovic doesn't list pricing on its website, but the company's class-leading exhaust systems aren't known to be cheap.
