The EQS is coming to reinvent electric luxury.

Mercedes-Benz is ready to start a new electric era with itsnewly minted EQ sub-brand. At the top of the EQ lineup sits the2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan, the S-Class of luxury electric vehicles. Mercedes just passed a major milestone with EQS production starting at Factory 56 in the Sindelfingen plant. This is the same factory where the gas-powered S-Class and Maybach S-Class are produced.

Mercedes says Factory 56 is its most sustainable and CO2-neutral vehicle manufacturing center. For example, 30% of the factory's electricity comes from photovoltaic systems mounted on the roof. Factory 56 is also the most advanced Mercedes manufacturing facility, with the ability to precisely connect different powertrains to their respective bodies in what the automaker calls the "Fullflex Marriage." A newly-developed MO360 digital ecosystem supports the more than 1,500 employees at the plant. These employees received extensive training to handle high-voltage technology.

The EQS Sedan joins the EQC SUV as the second EQ-branded model to enter series production, though thelatter is not available in the United States. Following the EQS, Mercedes has expressed plans to offer a slew of new EVs like the recently-announced EQA and EQB and the EQE sedan, which wespotted undergoing testing.

"The future of our global Mercedes-Benz production network begins with EQS production in Factory 56: this future is CO2-neutral, sustainable, fully digitalized, connected, and highly flexible," says Jorg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG, responsible for Production and Supply Chain Management.

"The start of production of the EQS is a highlight in our unprecedented electric vehicle initiative in the production area. In 2022, a total of eight Mercedes-EQ electric vehicles will be produced at seven locations on three continents."

When it arrives in the US, the EQS will reinvent the luxury EV market. The car will come in two trim levels, EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4MATIC, with the former producing 329 horsepower and the latter developing 516 hp. Ahigher-performance AMG versionwill arrive later with 630 hp. No official range estimates are available but we estimate it will travel around 335 miles on a charge. With production now underway, the EQS is expected to arrive at US dealerships in fall 2021.
