Motorsport /5 Comments

No, hybrid here, just twin-turbo V6 glory.

Ferrari has just unveiled the next generation of its Ferrari Challenge racecars: the 296 Challenge. Based on the296 GTBhybrid roadgoing car, this model hopes to build off of the success of the488 Challenge Evo racecarit replaces with innovations gleaned from years of racing and afforded by the 296 GTB's excellent upgrades.

The racear will debut in the 2024 season and will be unveiled in person on the eve of the Finali Mondiali which takes place at Mugello Circuit from October 24-30. As the ninth model in the history of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, the company says it takes many of the innovations first announced inthe 296 GT3 racecarlast year to a greater level.

The roadgoing 296 GTB features a hybrid powertrain comprising a 120-degree 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 654 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque. A rear-mounted electric motor adds 165 hp to the mix, giving the vehicle AWD and a total output of 819 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque.

For fans of pure combustion power, we have some good news: The 296 Challenge will also eschew the hybrid setup and go solely with the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6. Not only does this make the vehicle the first Ferrari Challenge racecar with a V6, but it's also the most powerful non-hybrid V6 powerplant the company has ever made, rated at 690 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque.

That's a substantial bump from the 600-hp 296 GT3 racecar, with the 296 Challenge featuring an astonishing 231 hp per liter. And the vehicle's aero, braking, and suspension upgrades are just as impressive.

The vehicle offers greater downforce figures than any car in the series' history, with the rear wing producing 1,918 lbs of force at 155 mph. On top of this, the company is debuting a new version of its ABS system called ABS EVO Track that will work in conjunction with the Brembo CCM-R PLUS brake discs and specifically formulated 19-inch Pirelli tires to ensure the vehicle can stop as well as it takes off.

This is but a sneak peek of the car, so expect a ton more information when it finally debuts in a few day's time, but thanks to the Challenge and GT3 racecars, we fully expect the company tosell quite a few more roadgoing 296 GTBs.
