OFFICIAL: Maserati Confirms MCXtrema As 730-HP MC20 Track Toy

Teaser /Comments

Project24 now has a proper name, but we already knew that.

Just yesterday,CarBuzzexclusively reported that Maserati would launch a hardcore version of the MC20 supercar, endowing it with the name MCXtrema, and that has now been confirmed by the Italian automaker. Sorry for stealing your thunder, Modena. Thankfully, there are things we didn't know before today, and Maserati has revealed some of those details.

For one thing, the MCXtrema is the name of the car first presented to us a year agoas Project24. As it was at the time, this iteration of theMC20is powered by the same Nettuno V6 but boosts it to 730 horsepower, up from 621 hp in the road car. This leads us to the next point: the MCXtrema is for the track only.

Just 62 examples of this circuit-confined toy will be produced, but don't bother with the checkbook - all are already sold out. What economic downturn? An exclusive supercar needs an exclusive debut venue, and Maserati has chosen this year's edition of theannual Monterey Car Week extravaganza. The MCXtrema will be unveiled on Friday, 18 August,as will a dozen other high-end cars.

Maserati has not said much else, but we already know a fair deal from the days when it was called Project24. For example, the output goes to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential racing transmission with a racing clutch. A limited-slip self-locking mechanical rear differential is also included.

Maserati also claimed a dry weight of under 2,755 pounds, some 551 fewer than the regular MC20 weighs. A carbon fiber monocoque, carbon fiber bodywork, upgraded suspension with adjustable dampers, adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars, carbon-ceramic brakes, and adjustable ABS and traction controls should all translate to a phenomenal experience on the track. An FT3 31.7-gallon fuel tank, an FIA-spec fire extinguisher, and a safety roll cage suggest that this is something built for a specific series, but much like Ferrari's XX program, the MCXtrema is intended for private track days arranged by the manufacturer. Basically, it's aMaserati GT2with the shackles removed.

We don't know how much this experience costs, but we're really glad Maserati seems to be finding its mojo. More of this, please.
