Maserati MCXtrema Coming As Hardcore MC20 Variant

Scoop /1 Comment

Will it be the most rapid Maserati ever?

Maserati has filed a trademark application for the name "MCXtrema."CarBuzzdiscovered the trademark filed with theItalian Patent and Trademark Officeand subsequently the European Intellectual Property Office. Unlike many trademark filings that are filed for multiple categories, this seems to be filed under only one, Nice Classification 12, but specifically detailed as "Sports cars; Motor racing cars."

The name itself is a play on the Italian word "Estrema" which translates as Extreme and was recently used for more performance-oriented Alfa Romeo models. In this case, however, it's paired with MC, which is the prefix used on Maserati's mid-engined supercars, of which it currently only produces one: theMaserati MC20.

Based on the filing classification, it could be a new car for a racing series, but considering Maserati has already introduced the Maserati GT2, an MC20-based race car that willcompete globally next year, it may also be the name of a more hardcore customer supercar.

Our educated guess tells us this will be a road car. The name suggests it will be the most extreme MC20 money can buy, but will it be powered by combustion, electricity, or a combination of both?

Maserati'sNettuno V6already produces 621 horsepower and 538 lb-ft, and we're sure the Italian brand held back a little for the inevitable facelift or a more hardcore model like the MCXtrema. Mansory has already proved that it's possible to get 710 hp out of the enginewith minor tweaks.

The MCXtrema could use aero upgrades derived from the race car but with an uncorked engine, kind of like a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. In this same vein of thought, it might not even be road legal but perhaps be a track-only model not homologated for sanctioned racing series; because rich people love toys no one else can have.

Another alternative is that performance may be augmented with a plug-in hybrid system. There were rumors that Alfa Romeo's upcoming supercar would be equipped with theNettuno V6 and at least one electric motor, pushing the power output to 800 horses and straight into Ferrari 296 territory.

开发适应electrificat MC20ion, so it's not entirely out of the question. The electrification of the MC20 gives us a nice segue to our second theory. We know an all-electric MC20 is coming, but Maserati hasn't explicitly confirmed that "Folgore" will be attached to its flanks. However, executives have referred to it in conversation as such.

But as a statement of intent, having an MC20 Folgore as a mass-market model and a bonkers, lightweight MCXtrema variant as a true halo could be the best way to show what the brand can do with electrification.

The GranTurismo Folgore uses three motors to produce around 760 hp. Using even this as a guideline, an electric MC20 and one badged as the 'Xtrema,' could well crest 1,000 hp.

What will it be? Only time will tell.
