How much power does the twin-turbo V6 really make?

Americamay have been deniedthe new Toyota Land Cruiser 300, but fans of the Japanese off-roader were, at least, compensated when the newLexus LXmade its way stateside. Based on the robust Toyota, it now features a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, replacing the previous generation's lusty but thirsty 5.7-liter V8.

Despite the downsizing, the new six-cylinder motor produces more power, with 409 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque on tap. This is the same amount as the Land Cruiser on which it's based, or is it?EKanooRacingrecently put its LX 600 to the test and the results were rather surprising.

Strapped to the dyno, the big Lexus gave its all and managed to muster 362 hp and 407 lb-ft. With drivetrain losses accounted for, this seems about right. However, when the tuning specialist tested the equally powerful Land Cruiser 300, it recorded 370 hp. So, why the power difference?

According toEKanoo Racing, the power deficit is likely down to the larger 22-inch wheels fitted to the Lexus. But with a mere nine miles on the odometer, it's also possible that this brand new LX 600 still has a few sleeping ponies under the hood, which will only be awaked as the run-in period is completed. Despite the 8-hp shortfall, we're still rather impressed that Lexus' claimed power output got so close to the real-world figure.

This isn't anything new, though. Previously,CarBuzzcovered a dyno test of the incredibly powerful Ram 1500 TRX. With a claimed 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, the V8-powered pickup is extremely quick - as it should be, with those figures. But when Hennessey strapped an example to its dyno, the results were telling. The test recorded considerably less power, at 583 hp and 571 lb-ft.

But some carmakers prefer to hide the proverbial light under a bushel. German marques Porsche and BMW are known to do this, famously understating the power outputs of the sportiest offerings. As the years go by, the weakened engine and components fail to match the original power output. Interestingly, an aged BMW M Coupe managed to surprise its owners, producingjust two fewer horsepower than new, despite being nearly two decades old. Amazingly, the torque figure increased.

With 325 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque when new, the 323 hp/270 lb-ft after nearly twenty years is impressive. Again, this also has a lot to do with the way a car is looked after and maintained over the years, but BMW, as mentioned, is known to downplay its figures. As for the Lexus, we're pretty sure that with time and more mileage, the engine will loosen up and soon be able to provide figures to match its Toyota sibling.
