Lexus LF-ZL Concept To Become New Range-Topping Luxury SUV

At the 2023 Japan Mobility Show,Lexus unveiled the LF-ZC conceptas a showcase for what its medium-term EV plans are for the future, but it also introduced the LF-ZL as a preview of what lies even further ahead.

The LF-ZL (Lexus Future Zero-emission Luxury) represents a future flagship luxury model that will likely replace the brilliant but rapidly agingLexus LS, or perhaps live alongside it should the sedan body style still be in demand from the wealthy elite. At nearly 209 inches long and 79.5 wide, it's longer and wider than the Lexus LX, yet only has two rows of seating within its 132-inch wheelbase. That points to its purpose as an ultra-luxury crossover where passenger comfort supersedes all else.

Lexus says the prestigious ownership experience will extend beyond the car, driven by Toyota's next-generation EV technology. Toyota promises 500 miles from a 20-minute charge by 2026 but also says 745 miles will be possible once solid-state batteries enter the picture. As the LF-ZL is labeled as the future, expect it to have big range figures.

And it will have plenty of luxury. Lexus says it has a serene cabin with traditional Omotenashi features. The latter simply means going the extra mile for your customers by paying intense attention to detail and anticipating their needs.

Lexus will use its new Arene OS to achieve the above. Arene is a new system that can control various aspects of the car, including driving characteristics, sounds, and vibrations. It's also connected to the steer-by-wire system and everything else that controls the vehicle, and we know that it can be updated over the air. What Lexus is saying without actually stating it is that in the future, its cars will become more autonomous, allowing the driver to sit back and look at their surroundings.

That's where "Interactive Reality in Motion" comes into play. The car will use onboard sensors and connectivity to give the owner more information about their surrounding. If the car sees a passenger pointing towards a McDonald's, it could provide customer feedback or tell you more about the franchise's history.

Its name also ties in withseveral trademarks Lexus filed recently. We now know what the LF-ZC is and that the "L" still stands for luxury.

What does this mean for the two remaining trademarks? We still have LF-ZV and LF-ZA left over, suggesting that Lexus has at least two more concepts waiting to be unveiled. It means Lexus is taking this whole EV thing seriously and that it has two more gaps to fill.

The best we can come up with for LZ-ZV is a fully electric version of Lexus'new ultra-luxurious minivan, released earlier this year. It would give Lexus something to pit against the upcoming Volvo EM90 minivan.

That leaves the "A." Traditionally, this means "Apex," which is why it's attached to the rear of an LFA, but has also been used to represent an entry-level class concept in the past. There have been multiple rumors about an LFA successor, but nothing concrete. Is this confirmation that the next LFA will be electric and will borrow the design language set by the LF-ZA and LF-ZL concepts? And all of the impressive technology we've mentioned?

Perhaps, but considering the Electrified Sport Concept has already previewed an electric LFA successor, we're inclined to believe the LF-ZA will be something else entirely. Time will tell.
