Jeep's Plug-In Hybrids Are Coming Soon

Get ready for some electrified off-roading.

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Nevada, Jeep showed off the first-everplug-in hybrid Wrangler. Dubbed, the 4xe, the Wrangler was the first in a trio of electrified models which will also include theJeep Renegadeand theJeep Compass. In fact, Fiat Chrysler plans to release 10 PHEV vehicles by 2022, three of which should be available by the end of 2020 (Wrangler, Renegade, and Compass).

The two models aren't available yet in the United States but if you live in Europe, Jeep is now offering "First Edition" models of the Renegade and Compass 4xe. Both of these sub-compact PHEVs utilize a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor, producing a total output of 240 horsepower. While they are a bit off the Wrangler 4xe's 270-hp 2.0-liter engine, the Renegade and Compass should be pretty spritely due to their small stature.

Both of these crossovers will use Jeep's new eAWD system, which sends the engine's power to the front wheels and the electric motor's power to the rear wheels, creating all-wheel-drive. Jeep estimates 0-62 mph at around seven seconds with a top speed of around 124 mph. In electric mode, the Renegade and Compass 4xe will be limited to around 80 mph but will boast an impressive EV range of around 31 miles. It is worth noting that these are European figures and the EPA-rated numbers will likely differ. 4xe models will have three driving modes including Hybrid, Full Electric, and E-save as well as special features such as Sport Mode, Eco coaching, and Smart Charging.

European customers who declare their interest on Jeep's website by March 9, 2020, can order a "First Edition" limited-edition model. The First Editions will be based on top trim levels and include standard driving assistance features as well as a charging pack for home and public use. We aren't sure if the US market will also receive the First Editions or something similar when the two models arrive stateside.
