The former talk show host has some strong words about Maranello's customer experience.

Ferrari is well-known as an exclusive brand. Even when you finally earn enough to purchase your first Prancing Horse, the people in Maranello still won't consider you apart of the family. To get to such a status, one needs to spend millions on numerous Ferrari classics and special editions. While this helps keep the riff-raff away, it also deters genuine gearheads and car collectors who just couldn't be bothered to abide by Ferrari'spompous and sometimes ridiculous rules. One such serious car guy isJay Leno, who has now revealed why there isn't a single Fezza in his substantial collection of noteworthy automobiles.

It may seem strange for somebody who has over 180 cars and 160 motorcycles to totally ignore one of the most significant automotive brands of the 20th century, but as the above interview with Jason Stein on hisCars and Culturepodcast shows, Leno's issue is not with the cars themselves.

"They're excellent cars, I just saw theSF90,I just never liked dealing with the dealers," says Leno. He mentions the need to buy twoMondialsto access another Ferrari of the time, indicating that a Ferrari dealer must have offended him at some point when he enquired about buying some sort of special edition Ferrari. Essentially, he feels like you need to fight with Ferrari to get the company to take your money unless you've already spent a fortune on various supercar stallions. By contrast, his experiences with McLaren and Porsche have always been fantastic, with both brands going out of their way to make the customer experience special.

In the case of the Woking-based brand, Leno recounts how a salesman talked him out of optioning carbon ceramic brakes that he'd never make full use of, saving him $20,000 in the process. His MP4-12C was also treated to a power boost from 592 to 617 horsepower at no cost, and when he purchased a Porsche Carrera GT, the car was delivered to him with a book about the car, some stationery, a jacket, and a few other special items to mark the occasion.

"You're spending an extraordinary amount of money; you should be made to feel like a customer," says Leno. Instead, he jokes, you buy the car from Ferrari and are forced to send it back after a few years to get a certificate of authenticity. Summing up the Ferrari experience is this gem from Leno: "It's like rich guys that go to a dominatrix. Oh, she kicked the crap out of me, it was fantastic! That's great; some guys like that. I don't."
