Hyundai N Vision 74 Concept Has A Design 50 Years In The Making

The retro concept car was almost produced in a very different form decades ago.

Hyundai'sN Vision 74 Concept is clearly retro, but did you know that its design - or at least something very similar - almost reached production 50 years ago? Hyundai has revealed the story of the N Vision 74's design origins and has also announced that it will once again avail itself of the services of the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro torecreate the original Hyundai Pony concept carthat inspired today's concept.

As we already know, the Hyundai Pony production car became the automaker's first mass-produced model, but the original concept had a more significant impact than Hyundai even originally realized. When the company's designers began developing theN Vision 74 rolling lab, they stumbled across something special.

设计师们参观了现代的设计中心拱门ives and found a blueprint drawing orPiano di Forma(Plan of Form). This document appeared to be a sketch of the Pony Coupe Concept, but the date on the paper revealed that the sketch was drawn on 18 February 1977 - two-and-a-half years after the Pony Coupe Concept was unveiled in 1974.

This warranted further investigation and, following the paper trail, revealed to the designers that the blueprint they found was the first drawing handed over to the engineering team by the design team. This essentially confirmed that the Pony Coupe was not always meant to remain a concept. But why was a fledgling automaker considering something as radical as a coupe at the time?

As it turns out, the company's founder, Chung Ju-yung, firmly believed that, although the development of the Pony was important as a mass-produced model to get the company on the map, Hyundai also needed to develop a sports car if it wanted to be recognized on the global stage.

Thus, Chung ordered that the Pony Coupe Concept be reverse-engineered. The project even reached the advanced prototype stage, with several models built and more detailed blueprints developed for additional prototypes. Unfortunately, "a series of factors, both external and internal" prevented Chung's dream from being realized, but the influence of the original Pony Coupe Concept is clearly evident in the brand's contemporary N Vision 74.

Hyundai is one of the few companies that stays true to many of its design concepts when vehicles reach production - just look at theHyundai 45 EV Conceptand theIoniq 5that it ultimately spawned.

With so much focus on the N Vision 74 and its design origins of late, we can't help but wonder if Hyundai is preparing to announce a production version. Fingers crossed.
