Honda Civic Type R Is Now More Expensive Than Ever

Sad news for fans of attainable performance cars: theHonda Civic Type R- Honda's hottest, most high-performance compact car - is getting a price increase as it slides into 2021.

The base MSRP of the Civic R has nudged upward by $400, at the same time that Honda has increased its destination fee by $40 for cars, and $55 for trucks and crossovers, spelling out a total price increase of $440 compared to the 2020 model year.

That may not seem like a whole lot for a car that costs nearly $40k in the US already, but it's better than half of an entire extra monthly payment, depending on how long a given customer might be financing for. It's alsofar from the only price increasethat the Civic R has had since its introduction.

While year-to-year price adjustments are by no means unusual in the automotive industry, it's not clear you're actually getting any more for your money. The 2021 Honda Civic Type R soldiers on with the same 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, good for 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, and six-speed manual as it's always had.

But the Type R isn't the only Civic getting a price increase heading into 2021; most of the lineup is nudging upward by $200 to $300. Interestingly, the top-of-the-line Limited Edition Type R is exempted from the $400 base price increase. Only the Type R Touring is getting a bump.
