不能believe it's taken this long.

We've known for a while that Jeep will be replacing the long-overdue-for-retirement Compass and Patriot crossovers. The replacement will be a single model slotted above the Renegade, which will also ride on a stretched and widened version of that vehicle's platform. Expect that so-far-unnamed vehicle to launch in the very near future. So are the Compass and Patriot about to bite the big one? Nope. According to a report from Automotive News, Jeep is planning to extend production of both into the 2017 model year.

Production, however, will end on December 23, 2016 at the automaker's Belvidere, Illinois, plant. The new Jeep will be built in Mexico (cue Donald Trump). Once Compass/Patriot production ends, Belvidere will soon begin building the Cherokee instead. The Compass and Patriot were both launched back in 2006 during the worst days of Chrysler. Based on the same platform as the old Dodge Caliber, neither one was considered a true Jeep by brand loyalists. The new Renegademay be a crossover butit does have tried and true off-roading capabilities. The Compass and Patriot very likely won't be missed.
