铁杆本田思域Type R-GT Hot Hatch Is Ready To Race

This thing is so wild it'll compete in the same races the Acura NSX did.

TheHonda Civic Type Ris one of the most popular hot hatches on the market, and for good reason: it's fast, stylish, and handles like a dream. But can it handle the blistering fast world of GT Racing? The Japanese marque sure thinks so, and a shakedown video from Honda Japan proves that.

The Civic Type R-GT is a race-ready version of the Civic Type R. It was designed to compete in Japan's Super GT series, in the top-tier GT 500 class, starting this upcoming season. Itreplaces the previous Honda competitor, the Acura/Honda NSX-GT, which means the Civic has some pretty big shoes to fill. The video shows the Type R-GT getting the shakedown treatment at the Okayama International Circuit.

To race in Japan GT500, Honda must meet strict regulations, including converting the front-wheel-drive Civic into rear-wheel drive, achieving a minimum weight of 2,249 lbs, and keeping the engine displacement within two liters with a 650 horsepower upper limit. Luckily, the engineers at Honda know a thing or two about building cars.

Under the hood, the Type R-GT is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. Power figures have not been released yet, but it should have no problems getting close to the 650 hp limit, much like the model it replaces. That's a significant increase over the standard Type R's 306 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential transmission that sends power to the rear wheels - the same setup as the NSX-GT.

The Type R-GT includes aerodynamic upgrades like a larger rear wing, revised front splitter, and side skirts, improving handling and stability at high speeds. It also benefits from chassis upgrades, including a stiffer suspension, roll cage, and racing slicks, making it more responsive and easier to control on the track.

We're excited to see how this performs against the Supra and thebonkers Nissan Z GT500in the races. We think it will do well, given that the regular Civic Type R hasbeen busting recordsfor front-wheel-drive cars, but we'll see about that as Japan Super GT commences in April 2024.
