European Corvette Buyers Wish They Lived In America

Rumor /17 Comments

Blame emissions laws. Again.

For now, this is merely a rumor but don't be surprised if turns out to be a fact. We've seen situations like this before. A German member of the MidEngineCorvetteForum claims he received information and confirmation from several European GM dealers theC8 Chevrolet Corvette Stingraywill have reduced power output due to a requirement to install what's called a Gasoline Particulate Filter in order to meet EU emission laws. Why is this kind of a big deal? Because it'll result in a drop in output.

The guy also provided the rumored new figures: 468 horsepower (down from 495), 455 lb-ft of torque (down from 470), and a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds instead of the 3 seconds flat we get here in America.

We've also reached out to General Motors Europe seeking additional confirmation and we'll update this space if necessary. This is particularly tough news for European C8 buyers because the car is already quite a bitmore expensivethere than here, which makes some sense because the 2LT Z51 is standard there.

In the UK, for example, the C8 Launch Edition begins at £81,700, about $102,870. The convertible cost even more at £87,110, or $109,690. Here in the US, the Corvette Coupe begins at just under $60,000. European Corvette sales are set to begin this summer with both left- andright-hand driveversions offered, according to country.

This isn't the first time European Corvette buyers are getting a raw deal. Nearly two years ago, sales were bannedfor both the Camaro and C7 Corvette because their shared 6.2-liter small-block LT1 V8 no longer met C02 requirements. That also effectively ended new Camaro sales for that market because only V8 models were imported before the ban went into effect.

The C8, however, is powered by a newer and more efficient (though apparently still not quite good enough for European standards) 6.2-liter LT2 V8. The power and performance drop, assuming it's true, will definitely be felt by owners and there's nothing they can do about it.
