But don't hold your breath.

Ever wonder what aFord Maverickrival from General Motors would look like, particularly one based on the Chevrolet Camaro? Brian Malczewski, the lead exterior designer at GM, recently dug up an old design sketch from his archives, revealing something that might fit the bill.

The sketch was penned in 2015 and was posted recently on GM Design's Instagram page. The image shows the side profile of a pickup version of theChevrolet Camaro, previewing a modernized El Camino. Malczewski described it as a muscle truck when he reposted his sketch on his Instagram feed.

If you're familiar with current GM products, it has nothing that can rival Ford's compact truck. However, the Detroit-based company isreportedly benchmarking the Maverickand pondering making anelectric-powered Maverick fighter.

Whatever it'll be, GM might want to come up with something soon. Ford, after all, is making a killing with the Maverick as it continuously leads the small pickup segment, outselling its Hyundai Santa Cruz rival. Even Toyota is speculated to want in on the compact truck action with a model called the Stout.

Ram, meanwhile, is considering bringing the new Rampage to America, so GM will be under pressure soon to join the segment.

Sadly, that means a Camaro Ute is incredibly unlikely. Not only is this sketch nearly 10 years old, but Chevrolet has already confirmed theCamaro is dead after 2024, meaning we won't see variants of it. That's not to say the Camaro will be relegated to the history books entirely, however, as the brand may bring it back as an electric muscle car in the future.

Perhaps, when it does, it might bring back the Chevy El Camino, or perhaps the El Camino moniker might lend itself to a compact unibody pickup truck.
