Cheaper Tesla Model S And X Discontinued After Massive Price Cuts

Electric Vehicles /Comments

The Standard Range variants of the Model S and Model X were $10,000 cheaper than their Long Range counterparts.

Not even a month has passed, and Tesla already dropped the new Standard Range (SR) variants for theModel Sand Model X.

To recap, theEV maker added the SR variantsfor the aforementioned models a few weeks ago, which are $10,000 cheaper than their Long Range (LR) counterparts. The catch is that these variants offered less range and performance despite using the same 100 kWh battery packs.

Tesla limited the battery via software instead of installing a smaller battery pack. Sources close to Tesla claim around 21% of the usable capacity was locked. Some speculated the company could offer SR owners more range and performance in the future for an additional payment.

It also would've been interesting to see whether Tesla communities could find a way tohack the locked battery. Then again, they won't have to bother anymore now that the SR variants have been discontinued, as confirmed on Tesla's customer-facing website.

In line with this and as a follow-up to theprevious price cuts, Tesla has slashed the Model S andModel Xprices, now starting at $74,990 and $79,990, respectively. Those are significant price drops, considering the two EVs were offered around $100,000 at the start of the year.

With the price of the Model X now under $80,000, the midsize crossover EV is now eligible for federal tax credits along with the Model 3 and Model Y. However, the Model S is still not eligible as the price cap for sedans is $55,000.

Of note, Tesla has alsodropped the Model 3 prices, just in time for theglobal reveal of its facelifted version.通用汽车还没有提供details and availability in North America.

Now that the SR variants are no longer part of the lineup, the entry-model Model X returns to offering an EPA-rated range of 348 miles and can go from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Meanwhile, the cheapest Model S has an EPA-rated range of 405 miles and a 3.1-second acceleration time.
