New Tesla Model S And Model X Standard Range Offer $10,000 Savings For Less Range

These are now the cheapest options for the Tesla Model S and X.

Tesla has introduced new Standard Range (SR) variants of the2023 Model Sand Model X that are $10,000 cheaper than the Long Range (LR) models.

一个Model S SR costs $78,490, while the Model X SR retails for $88,490. As you'd expect, some sacrifices were made. The Model S SR is limited to 320 miles, while the LR can cover 405 miles before needing a charge. You'll hardly notice the slight difference in performance, however. The SR takes 3.7 seconds to reach 60 mph, while the LR can do it in 3.1 seconds.

The Model X SR has a claimed range of 269 miles with a 4.4-second 0-60 mph time. The Long Range model's range is 348 miles, and it gets to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

With the 21-inch wheels, the Model S SR's range drops to 298 miles. The Model X SR's range drops to 255 miles with the optional 22-inch wheels.

Interestingly, these new Standard Range models feature the same 100 kWh battery pack found in the Long Range versions, but they are software limited to save costs. Sources close to Tesla claim around 21% of the usable capacity is locked, meaning customers will only ever have access to less than 80 kWh.

It's unclear if Tesla will sell a battery unlock for more range and performance. We imagine Tesla could easily charge $10,000 or more for such a feature if the original or second owner regrets getting the Standard Range. A customer might not have the money for a Long Range model now, but they might in the future.

Or perhaps these SR models can behacked to unlock the additional capacity.

一个s for why Tesla decided to limit the battery via software rather than install a smaller pack, there are two schools of thought. Having only one pack as standard fitment across the range is more cost-effective and reduces complexity during the build process.

It also offers greater upgradability to the customers. As mentioned earlier, a customer can get a Model S or X for a little less and save up to unlock the full potential.

Conversely, installing a 100 kWh battery back with less than 80% usability could be considered environmentally wasteful, especially for a company with the mission "to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy."

The resources that could have been used in another electric vehicle are now simply along for the ride, doing nothing.
