Technology /Comments

The new 7 Series will be the first beneficiary of the technology.

Designed to snatch the luxury car crown from Stuttgart, BMW's2023 7 Seriesis a massively impressive grand sedan. Together with its electrified sibling, Munich's executive express ispacked full of innovative technologyfor occupants to play with as they're chauffeured to their next important event. But there's one area where the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has it beat.

In May, Mercedes announced the Sonderklasse and the EQS will bemade available with Level 3 autonomous drivingcapabilities in certain regions. Under specific conditions, drivers will be able to palm off responsibilities to the vehicle and get on with more pressing tasks. But if an insider is to be believed, BMW isn't far away from implementing the same tech in the 7er, upcoming 5 Series, andthe all-electric i5.

一个s seen on theBimmerpostforum, the luxury sedans will receive BMW'sLevel 3 autonomous system, referred to as Personal Pilot. This will reportedly become available on the (G70) 7 Series in late 2023, with the upcoming 5 Series/i5 sedans gaining the tech from July 2024. The technology will be reserved for the Chinese and European markets. "I'm not seeing this functionality on US cars yet," says user who allegedly gleaned the information from various leaks within the BMW organization.

Mercedes-Benz plans to trial its Level 3 self-driving technology in the USA sometime this year. The implementation and widespread adoption of this technology is a rather big deal. Very soon, a fleet of luxury BMWs will hit the road and take full control of the driving, with those behind the wheel not required to pay attention, scenario permitting.

While BMW is yet to make an official statement, the company has beenworking on self-driving technologyfor quite some time. The German luxury brand signed an agreement with technology company Qualcomm earlier this year to perfectautonomous drivingthrough the use of the latter's advanced software and expertise.

The company insider also has other insights into the all-new 5 Series. Set to go into production in July 2023, several models will be available at launch; a base ICE-powered variant and a pair of i5 EVs, one being the high-powered i5 M60 xDrive. Shortly after that, we can expect an additional i5 derivative and hybrid models to join the lineup.
