Existing safety features applied to the iX crossover will be further refined.

TheBMW iXacts as an inaugural product for the company's next step in electromobility. Where thei3 launched the idea of an electric-only car, the new crossover has evolved the concept into one that eliminates key frustrations such as range anxiety and cramped interior space. Compared to the i3, the new product is notably more expensive, but we will see this technology trickle down into slightly more affordable cars from the brand in due time.

Together with advancements in electromobility, BMW has also been investing heavily in safety features. Autonomous driving technologies are a hot topic in the industry at the moment as manufacturers across the globe, apart from the likes of Ferrari, have a goal of minimizing the number of fatalities on the road. The launch of the iX was a notable move forward forthe company's self-driving aspirations.

To maintain the momentum, BMW has signed an official partnership with Qualcomm, anexpert in the safety systems and technology field. The strategic cooperation will see these two giants, together with Arriver Software AB, work to polish out the self-driving technology - including "Arriver Computer Vision and the Snapdragon Ride Platform's compute SoC controllers managed by Snapdragon Car-to-Cloud Services platform," destined for future cars from the Bavarian brand.

With this collaboration, over 1,400 specialists will come together from places such as Germany, the USA, Sweden, China, Romania, and the BMW AD Test Center in the Czech Republic. that said, these companies are "open to further partnerships," which shows just how serious the corporations are about improving this tech as much as possible.

The final goal is to transform the abovementioned controllers into a scalable platform by working on architecture, sensor-set specifications, and safety requirements. Qualcomm states that it already working closely with BMW and Arriver but will maintain its existing partnerships with the likes of Cadillac on its upcomingUltra Cruise autonomous driving system. Volvo, Audi, and others have also begun relationships with the company.

"This joint software development is an important milestone for the BMW Group with regards to our next generation Automated Driving platform," says Nicolai Martin, Senior Vice President Driving Experience, BMW Group. "To enable sophisticated and safe functionalities in a vehicle you need state-of-the-art software in all components of the digital value chain. This forms the backbone for intelligent driver assistance systems. The BMW Group is excited to further extend our partnership with global technology leaders Qualcomm Technologies and Arriver to include a long-lasting strategic co-development cooperation in order to continue delivering world-class driving experiences to our customers."
