The derided design language could actually be having a positive effect on sales.
Many BMW loyalists and industry onlookers expressed fears that the brand'sextreme design language- specifically the dramatic growth of its kidney grilles - would negatively impact sales. Still, it appears that the opposite is occurring.
Based on the company's latest United States sales figures for the second quarter of this year, each of the brand's vehicles with the most prominent and divisive grille designs has performed exceptionally well.
There were significant sales increases in Q2 2023 compared to Q2 2022 for the4 Series, 7 Series, and iX, while even the XM put in a solid performance despite its high starting price of $159,000. The numbers seem to support BMW's stance tostick with its polarizing grille designsdespite the criticism.
This era of massive grille designs began with the second-generation 4 Series, a model line that moved 13,765 units in Q2 2023, up 107.1% over the same quarter last year. That figure includes sales of all 4 Series variants, including the 4 Series Gran Coupe.
相比之下, the comparatively conventional 3 Series sold 7,665 examples in Q2 2023, a more modest 24.1% increase over the same period last year. In fact, the gap between the 3 Series and 4 Series is widening; the former was still outselling the latter regularly in 2021, but not anymore.
Moving up the pricing scale, the all-new 7 Series also shocked the motoring world with its vast grille时显示在i7last year, but the large sedan found 2,311 buyers in Q2 2023, a 66.1% increase over the same period last year.
BMW does not specify how many of these sales are for the all-electric i7, but it's clear that the 7's controversial styling hasn't chased away what is perceived as a more conservative target audience.
Perhaps most impressive is the electricBMW iXSUV, which sold 4,135 units last quarter, an increase of 282.5%. Like the 4 Series, this unusually styled vehicle also has large vertically-oriented kidneys. Looking at its rivals, Audi of America reported that the cheaper Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron sold a combined 1,119 units last quarter, far below the iX. Even including 660 e-tron sales before it wasrebadged as the Q8 e-tron, the iX is still well ahead.
The X1 moved 4,032 units, an increase of 138.4%, and this is another model that sports a larger grille than its predecessor. Finally, the high-end XM moved 762 units in Q2 2023, but its starting price should be taken into account when considering this figure.
Interestingly, Q2 2023 sales of the 2 Series (-21.7%), 8 Series (-32.6%), X3 (-32.5%), and X5 (-2.5%) all declined, and all of these retain more sensibly-sized kidneys. Of course, correlation is not causation, and none of this means that BMW's individual model sales have been directly influenced by the size of its grille designs, but there is enough evidence to suggest that the brand's bold design language has not deterred customers.
