Bentley Will Unveil Its First Fully Organic Leather Option At The Quail

Teaser /5 Comments

It's organic, not vegan.

Bentley announced its first fully organic leather option, which will be revealed at The Quail during Monterey Car Week. Bentley will offer this new leather option across its entire vehicle range eventually.

This leather will be shown on a new Bentley model that will also debut at the show next week. Bentley did not say what this model would be, but these images match up with the interior of theBentayga. We know the company's first EVwaspushed back to 2025, so we can't rule it out.

The most likely scenario is the heavily faceliftedBentley Continental GT, possibly in hybrid guise to match up with the organic leather. The entire GT range will be refreshed, and the hybrid is the final piece in Bentley's electrification puzzle.

Not to be confused with artificial leather used by companies like Tesla, Bentley's organic leather is still made from cow hides.

However, the leather is tanned using a sustainable process using an organic by-product from the olive oil industry. This by-product is collected from wastewater during the olive pressing procedure, so it's free from harmful metals, minerals, and aldehydes. Bentley says it is the first automaker to use the Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) technology from the leather tannery, Pasubio SpA.

Bentley already uses sustainable leather practices, gathering hides that are by-products of the meat industry and would have been thrown out otherwise. This practice saves around 270 million hides annually that would have gone to landfills instead.

"Leather is an integral component of our car interiors and a prime element in creating Bentley's signature finish. It is also hard-wearing - especially important as 84% of all Bentley cars built are still on UK's roads," said Marc Stang, Technical Expert Leather at Bentley Motors. "We use eight to 12 hides per car, all of which are sourced in the European Union. Bentley also avoids using hides linked to deforestation, reflecting the work within our supply chain to encourage greener processes. We remain committed to more sustainable leather sourcing, as well as working on other initiatives to improve our leather supply chain."

The new Olive Tan Leather will be revealed next week on August 18, 2023.
