Audi TT RS Iconic Edition Is A $100,000 Celebration Of 5 Cylinders

Special Editions /13 Comments

We could be looking at one of the last five-pot Audis ever.

A whole 25 years ago,Audi debuted its TT Coupe, a small, four-cylinder sports car with a manual transmission and AWD.

It was unlike anything the German manufacturer had done before and a product born in an era when Audi was at the top of its game. To celebrate that quarter-century benchmark, Audi has released theAudi TT RSCoupe Iconic Edition.

The name is quite a mouthful, and the pricing details will be just as hard to swallow for some. Only 100 will be made for Europe, with 11 bound for the UK, priced at $100,504.

Steep, yes, but the TT RS is a blistering car with a broad range of talents.

All 100 cars will be powered by a five-cylinder turbocharged engine, like the one in the RS3.

The TT RS will produce 395 horsepower and 353 lb-ft of torque in this trim. Unfortunately, the stick shift TT died with the last generation, so owners will have to make do with Audi's seven-speed S Tronic automatic gearbox. Still, that does net you a 60 mph sprint in just 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph. We do not doubt that quattro AWD significantly helps that 0-60 time.

To honor the OG TT, Audi has made some notable changes to the current iteration of its sports car, which was named for the Isle of Man TT race.

The most significant change is undoubtedly the aero kit. Audi says it spent some time perfecting it in a wind tunnel, so it's not just for looks. The new aerodynamic bits are both eye-grabbing and functional. A new carbon fiber wing has been added at the rear, which also gets a new diffuser and endplates.

At the front, a new splitter with canards helps give the TT a racy look fitting of its namesake. It's a far cry from the bubbly styling of the old car, but we think it works with Audi's new, macho-man design. Take a peek out of the coupe's rear, and you'll find "Iconic Edition" lettering on the rear quarter glass.

Inside, Audi has done up the interior to commemorate this special occasion. Of course, that means a badge connotating which of the 100 units you own. You'll find that on the shifter, which gets new yellow stitching. The yellow stitching carries throughout the interior, to the seats, the wheel, the floor mats, and even onto the dash. You'll find loads of Alcantara inside as well.

Audi has already axed the five-cylinder TT RS here in America, which it与传统Editi罚下on. If we're forced to choose, we're pretty stoked we got the American send-off we did.

Still, a hardcore Audi with a five-cylinder is becoming ever more so a thing of the past, and this special edition is sure to be worth it.
