Acura Says Its Type S EVs Will Be Exciting And Engaging

Electric Vehicles /8 Comments

The premium brand isn't interested in hybrids and will rely on GM's expertise to help until Honda is ready.

Acura recently announced thatcombustion would continueto be a part of its operations for some time, and when the shift to electrified vehicles takes place, hybrids will be skipped andthe brand will jump straight into EVs. We can see evidence of the premium automaker's intentions with itsnew Precision EV concept. These EVs will beunderpinned by General Motors' Ultium battery technology首先,和Honda's upcoming e:Architecture platform will join the fray later, with both Acura and GM set to benefit from it. Acura's first car on this platform is planned to arrive in 2026.

As the premium Japanese automaker moves forward with its plans, we spoke with Acura's national sales VP, Emile Korkor, to see what route this roadmap to EVs would take.

We asked how Acura is looking to take advantage of parent company Honda's deal with GM, and the answer was an obvious, straightforward one: "This partnership with GM helps unlock economies of scale that benefit both companies and accelerates Acura's electrification roadmap in North America." Without GM's help, Acura's first EV - theZDX, slated to arrive in 2024- would be even further off from production and would be more expensive to produce.

This vehicle will look a lot like the Precision EV Concept but will be clearly different, providing a more toned-down, production-ready take on the concept's styling elements. Will it be based on the same platform as Honda's Prologue EV? Korkor wouldn't say, but the fact that it is being developed with GM should mean good things.

We then asked which other models, or at least, vehicle segments, would be first to get the EV treatment after the newZDX, but this information was withheld too. Nevertheless, Acura feels confident that the ZDX will be successful and is "targeting annual sales of roughly 30,000 units."

A Type S model was teased alongside the regular ZDX, which should help Acura hit those targets, but how will electrification and the Type S moniker coexist, especially as weight becomes even more of a concern with heavy battery packs?

"The second-genNSXhas clearly demonstrated the unique capabilities and benefits of electrified performance, with a pure focus on creating an exhilarating experience for the driver. Acura will continue to develop our vehicles in the electrified era with the goal of exciting and engaging drivers. Type S performance variants will take this a step further, beginning with an electrified ZDX Type S arriving in 2024."

答案是一个通常corporat发表意见e one that says plenty but tells us nothing. However, we know that there are great performance benefits to individual wheel control through advanced torque vectoring, which is possible when an electric motor is placed on multiple wheels. We also know that it's pretty easy to increase performance through basic software upgrades.

But that still leaves us with the issue of excess weight, something that sporty Acuras have typically been very averse to. Hopefully, Acura doesn't overproliferate the market with Type S-badged EVs that are too bloated to be fun. We'll bring you more info as we get it.
