A New Electric BMW Is Coming Today

Teaser /3 Comments

One last sneak preview to whet our appetites.

BMW's rapidly expanding electric lineup will grow even larger with the advent of the iX1. In the last few months, our talented lensmen have snapped shots of thecrossover undergoing testing, giving us a good idea of what the EV will look like when it arrives. Ahead of today's official reveal, BMW has taken to Twitter to provide us with a final teaser.

From what we can see, theX1's electric sibling will retain the traditional BMW SUV look and even borrows styling cues from its larger family members. The grille is much bigger than before and, like other BMW i models, features a modern take on the traditional Kidney shape.

Blue detailing borders the BMW roundel and can also be seen on the iX1 badging; this further sets it apart from its ICE-powered counterparts.

Round back, BMW has provided us with our best look yet of the redesigned taillights. Now resembling the items found on the updated X3 and iX3 models, the rear clusters look far more modern than before and lend the battery-powered crossover a more modern look.

The iX1 is unlikely to stray very far from the conventional X1 design. Save for the range-topping iX, the company's latest EVs retain the overall styling of the combustion-powered models. Sadly, the iX1won't be made available stateside, which is a shame.

At least European buyers have plenty to look forward to; WLTP cycle figures indicate the electric newcomer will be able to travel up to 272 miles between charges, which compares favorably with the Volvo XC40 Recharge. The arrival of the iX1 will be key to BMW's ever-strengthening EV success. The company sold 100,000 electric vehicles last year and plans todouble that figure in 2022.

The Bavarian automaker has gone to great lengths to make the iX1 feel like a true BMW from behind the tiller. As part ofcold-weather testing, engineers used the unique conditions to fine-tune the electric all-wheel-drive system and improve the overall dynamics and handling characteristics of the small EV.

Along with its ICE-powered siblings, the iX1 will cause a stir in other markets. Demand for compact luxury crossovers remains strong and the EV segment is also enjoying steady growth. Combining the two will see people flocking to BMW dealerships in their droves. Aside from the electric variant, the new X1 is also set to receive ahigh-performance X1 M35ivariant. Seemingly catering to everyone, the new X1/iX1 will certainly steal sales from the GLA-Class.
