2020 Toyota Corolla Arrives With Hot New Look

Reveal /25 Comments

The hatchback's sporty looks have found their way to the sedan.

When Toyota revealed the all-new 2019 Corolla hatchback, we weresurprised at how aggressive it looked and how joyous it was to drive. Of course, it's still no hot hatchback (though a hotter version has been rumored), but it is a fair bit more interesting than the Corolla sedan, which was left with barely any changes for the 2019 model year.

Now, at the launch event for the 2019 RAV4, Toyota has revealed the all-new 2020 Corolla sedan, which looks to take the inspiring looks of the hatchback and bring them to the more popular sedan bodystyle. Based on first impressions, we like what we see.

What's New

2020年的花冠是基于丰田的新全球rchitecture (TNGA), which underpins various other Toyota and Lexus products. This new platform has a lower center of gravity and refined suspension tuning. Interestingly, the L, LE, and XLE trims will use the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in the previous generation car, albeit with more power and greater efficiency. SE and XSE trim levels will use the new 2.0-liter engine found in the hatchback, producing 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque.

Like the hatchback, power is sent to the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or a CVT. The manual transmission was newly developed for the Corolla hatchback and even features rev match downshifts. The CVT is also new and simulates 10 gears. Yes, we know many of our readers hate CVTs, but Toyota has come a long way to eliminate the sloppy feel associated with them.

A Much Improved Design

丰田承诺是建立无聊的汽车and we think the company has been heading in the right direction in terms of design language - this new Corolla looks far more aggressive than the last generation model. Although the new car rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase (the same as the outgoing car), it has been made wider and lower than the car it replaces.

The SE and XSE models (pictured here) are the most aggressive in the lineup, with a body-color chin spoiler, LED headlights, and aero stabilizing fins. This is also the first Corolla to offer 18-inch wheels on the SE and XSE grades, though the other trim levels make do with 16-inch wheels.

Interior Improvements

On the inside, the 2020 Corolla sedan closely replicates the 2019 hatchback. This includes a high-resolution eight-inch touchscreen with Toyota Entune 3.0 on all trims except the L, which has a seven-inch screen. Thankfully, Entune 3.0finally includes Apple CarPlayand Amazon Alexa integration, though Android Auto is still absent. The main infotainment display works in tandem with a 4.2-inch or optional seven-inch multi-information display in the gauge cluster.

Toyota says this new Corolla is even roomier than its predecessor thanks to a lower seating position and beltline. The car has also been made quieter using more sound deadening materials throughout the cabin and between the panel gaps. Even the air conditioning system is all-new and can automatically send dehumidified air into the cabin to prevent window fogging.

Loads Of Standard Safety

No Toyota would be complete without that sense of confidence which has defined the brand for decades. As such, Toyota has made sure the 2020 Corolla is packed with standard safety features. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 comes standard on all trims and includes pre-collision avoidance, radar cruise control with stop-and-go, lane departure warning with steer assist, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. Blind spot monitoring can also be standard (depending on the trim level) as can a handy brake hold feature.

Pricing And Availability

Unfortunately, pricing and availability have not been made available just yet. We expect the 2020 Corolla to be priced close to the 2019 hatchback, which starts at $19,990 for the SE trim and tops out at $24,090. If anything, the sedan will likely be a bit cheaper than its hatchback sibling when it goes on sale in 2019.
