You Can Own The Famous Ferrari 250 GT From Ferris Bueller's Day Off

In 1986, actor Matthew Broderick starred in the teen comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off directed by John Hughes. For gearheads, however, the real star of the movie was the 1961Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyderthat featured prominently in the film, a car many enthusiasts regard as one of the most beautiful convertibles ever made. "The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California. Less than 100 were made. My father spent three years restoring this car. It is his love. It is his passion," Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) famously said when introducing the car to Ferris Bueller (Brokerick). This, of course, was all a setup for the car's demise when it reverses out of a garage and plunges into a ravine. Good thing, then, it wasn't a genuine Ferrari 250 GT. A real example was simply too valuable to feature in the film, even back in 1986.

Instead, it was a replica built by Modena Design and Development in El Cajon, California, which put the American company on the map. And one of the three cars built for the movie is heading to auction. Two working replicas were made for the film, but a real Ferrari was used for close-up shots. A mock-up was also made for the final stunt. While the car has plenty of Ferrari-inspired styling cues, it features a fiber glass body that Mecum Auctions says was "supposedly modeled after an MG." It rides on a bespoke steel frame and features Ferrari-inspired styling details including the grille, front fender vents and hood scoop.
