Why Does The 2024 Ford F-150 Have A Much Lower Payload Than Before?

First, let's take a look at those payload figures. The 2023 model could haul up to 3,315 pounds, but the 2024 replacement's maximum payload is now 2,455 lbs, a shocking drop of 860 lbs. To be fair, the 2024 model still has a class-leading payload figure.

As for why this change has occurred, it all relates to Ford wanting to reduce ordering complexity by up to 90%. That means removing options that weren't as popular, including the Heavy Payload Package available on 2023 models that very few customers actually selected.

It was this Heavy Payload Package that enabled the payload capacity of over 3,300 lbs. This option required a specific configuration like the 5.0-liter V8 engine with the single-cab body, 4x2, the eight-foot bed, and the Max Trailer Tow Package. Since that configuration wasn't popular, Ford decided to scrap it, and that's why the payload capacity is lower.

"The 2024F-150still offers best-in-class max payload capacity,"said a Ford spokespersontoRoad & Track. "Payload was reduced when the Heavy Payload Package was removed for the 2024 model year. We're simplifying our offerings based on how we know customers actually use their vehicle and running the business more efficiently."

福特's logic seems sound, even if it means a small percentage of buyers who need that kind of payload capacity may be left frustrated. Of course, they always have the option of upgrading to the heavy-dutyF-250or F-350. A recenttrademark for the F-200 namesuggests an intermediary between the F-150 and F-250 may also be in the pipeline that could remedy this payload discrepancy.

Interestingly, the 2024 F-150's maximum towing capacity of 13,500 lbs is also lower, but not by much. The 2023 model could tow up to 14,000 lbs with the Max Trailer Tow Package on some models, but the new one doesn't have this. For most people, 13,500 lbs is more than enough towing capacity, anyway.

Based on the statement by the Ford spokesperson, we also assume that the PowerBoost hybrid engine was mostly chosen by customers buying more expensive configurations of the pickup. For 2024, this engine option will cost over $12k more since it requires at least the XLT in SuperCrew 4x4 format. By focusing on what customers actually want and not bragging rights in the pickup segment, Ford has made ordering a new F-150 simpler while improving production efficiencies.
