Watch A 1988 Honda Civic Run Nine-Second Quarter-Mile

Video /6 Comments

This is no ordinary drag car.

Many people view drag racing as a skill-free sport. You plant your right foot, keep the steering wheel straight, and come to a stop仅仅几秒钟后. However, there's a lot of skill that goes into making all those things go off without a hitch, and modulating wheelspin is one of the biggest challenges a driver can face. To get around this, all-wheel-drive setups are ideal, but they're also heavy. To overcome that weight, you need lots of power. Ottimoto Racing in Germany has made this work in an unlikely host - a 1988Honda Civic年代huttle, one of the rarer variants that was never quite as loved as the hatchback.

According to the tuning company's Instagram feed, the car is not running at 100 percent just yet and there are some kinks still to be ironed out, but that makes the following statement all the more impressive: This AWD turbocharged Honda Civic crossed the quarter-mile in just 9.92 seconds, an astonishing achievement.

The time was recorded at a drag racing event called L8-Night in Brandenburg, Germany, in the town of Klettwitz. Scrolling through Ottimoto's social media feeds, it seems that this event is a particular favorite of the tuning company, and it has achieved even lower times with other ridiculously modified Hondas in the past.

年代o what powers this monster? What else but a K-series engine, specifically the K20A2 four-pot. Thanks to a ported head from Schmidt Motoring, along with upgraded rocker arms, intake and exhaust valve, a bigger fuel rail, and a long list of other mods that includes a Garret GT42 turbocharger, the Civic is estimated to produce around 750 horsepower. That's more than you get in aMcLaren 720S.

Clearly, AWD is the best way to put the power down, as we've seen from othersub-10-second passes at the strip. There's no denying that there are many RWD cars that caneasily best this time, but it's the fact that this was achieved with an old chassis and a relatively small engine that makes the feat truly impressive.
