VW Is On A Mission To Fix Its EV Designs

The brand's design chief wants VW cars to look like the Golf and Passat from the '90s.

Volkswagen's current ID. Series consists of futuristic-looking models. While that sounds promising, the design of the VW EVs doesn't sit well with car buyers. Even Volkswagen admitted its EV design language just doesn't click anymore, and changes must be made.

In a report byMotor Trend, Volkswagen Design HeadAndreas Mindtis looking to turn around the brand's future design direction. He said the early EV designs were intended to attract consumers to shift from ICE cars. With the EV market on the rise, brands don't have to make design adjustments they used to do for early adopters anymore.

"EVs are now 15 percent of the global market, and more than 50 percent of the market in China. This is not an early adopter business anymore," said Mindt.

Volkswagen's design boss said the key is to refrain from designing models to look like futuristic EVs. In other words, EVs no longer need to look "weirdly different." One of the concepts that reflect the new design language is theID. 2all concept, an all-electric hatchback reminiscent of theVolkswagen Golf.

The VW ID. 2all was created with Mindt at the helm of the design board. Not everyone would guess the 2all concept is an all-electric car as opposed to VW ID models such as theID. Buzzand ID. 4.

And that's why he thinks the concept received positive comments when released earlier this year.

Mindt's vision is simple - make Volkswagens look like the Golf and Passat from the '90s. "This is the secret sauce," said Mindt. "The car is better than you expect, and you start to love it. Our aim is to be the love brand."
