Volkswagen Taos Ready To Storm The US Border

The first examples have just rolled off the Mexican assembly line.

The all-electric ID.4 will be the most significant Volkswagen product launch in the United States since the New Beetle emerged in 1997. ID.4production has already begunwith deliveries beginning later this year, but it's not the only significant VW crossover that will arrive in the US later this year. Volkswagen de Mexico just announced the start of production for the US market2022 Volkswagen Taos.

For those who have forgotten, the Taos is asmaller crossover modelthat will slot below the Tiguan in VW's lineup. The Puebla plant has already produced more than 4,300 units of Taos to date for the Mexican market, and the US will be the model's first foreign market outside of Mexico.

"With Taos, Volkswagen de Mexico strengthens its position as a key player in the brand's global strategy for the SUV segment and will increase production capacity at the Puebla Plant, with products designed for the North American Region," said Steffen Reiche, CEO, and President of Volkswagen de Mexico.

"We are very proud of this new milestone, achieved through the excellent teamwork of all stakeholders. We reaffirm our commitment to continue delivering the best products, with the quality and efficiency that our customers expect," added Christopher Glover, Vice President of Production and Logistics at Volkswagen de Mexico.

VW invested more than $400 million into its Puebla, Mexico plant in preparation for foreign market Taos production. The 2022 Taos is expected to arrive at US showrooms by the end of Q2 2021, and production for Canadian market cars is set to begin in the coming weeks. It will come sporting a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Pricing has not been announced, but we expect it to undercut the Tiguan, which starts at $25,245.
