Toyota 'Tacozilla' Camper Is The Ultimate Overland Tacoma

SEMA 2021 /5 Comments

It's being revealed at this year's SEMA show.

Two weeks ago, Toyotashowed us the Tacozilla. Based on a ToyotaTacoma TRDSport pickup, the TacozillaTacomaCamper comes with an overlanding-ready 'micro-house'. The retro design was inspired by Toyota campers from the 1970s and 1980s. Initially, only renderings were shown, but now the cool Tacozilla has been revealed in full at this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas. Toyota says that the Tacozilla is the "ultimate expression ofoverlanding," and that's obvious based on the concept's long list of features. It's the perfect tool to escape the drudgery of the rat race for a couple of weeks.

The Tacozilla uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. It's got TRD Pro wheels, a TRD suspension with a two-inch lift and TRD billet upper control arms, and bodywork done by Complete Customs in McKinney, Texas. The wheels are wrapped in General Tire Grabber X3 all-terrain tires. A igid light bar, an integrated winch, and a TRD air intake round out the exterior changes.

Of course, this truck is all about the micro-sized house mounted onto the back. The designers didn't have a lot of space to work with but they've made the most of it. The end result is a fully insulated interior with teak sauna-style flooring. The full bathroom includes a hot-water shower.

The full kitchen includes a refrigerator, stove, and sink. When it isn't in use, a 3D-printed dining table transforms into a backlit piece of wall art. Finally, sleeping space is provided above the cab. Over 100 hours were spent designing the rear door alone, as they wanted a vehicle that was both well-engineered and good to look at. It's practical, too, as a person up to six feet tall can walk inside comfortably. The truck's rounded lines weren't easy to create, but the team "didn't want it to look like a refrigerator on the back of a truck."

"Tacozilla is an outstanding symbol of Toyota's go-anywhere brand promise to our many owners who love overlanding and outdoor fun," said Lisa Materazzo, group vice president of Toyota Divison Marketing. With year-end holidays now within sight, the Tacozilla would've been the ultimate getaway vehicle - if only you could buy one.
